Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters install and repair pipes that carry liquids or gases to and in businesses, homes, and factories.
High School Diploma/GED Certificate
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and posses a high school diploma or GED. Must be physically able to perform the work of the trade. Must be able to read, write and speak the English language in order to comprehend instructions on the job and related training classes and to ensure personal and coworker safety on the job.
Must be able to attend training classes which usually take place two times a week, prior to being selected for an apprenticeship program. Professional credentialing is granted to individuals who meet the minimum education and work experience requirements, and who are able to pass an examination. Certification from professional organizations can be useful for promotional reasons. Apprenticeship programs vary in length and additional training and classes may be neccesary for specialty applications. While continuing education is not required for Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters, they will need to keep current on updates and changes to CALGreen.
