All persons performing phlebotomy must be certified. There are three kinds: Limited - authorized to do skin puncture blood collection only; Certified I - authorized to do venipuncture and skin punctures; Certified II - authorized to do venipuncture, arterial puncture and skin punctures.

Phlebotomists must have a complete immunization record, pass criminal background checks, complete CPR certifications, and pass the national licensing examinations. CPR certifications must be updated every 12 months.
Educational Opportunities for Advancement
1st step up & time required
Complete 40 hours phlebotomy class. Complete a minimum of 40 hours phlebotomy practice that includes at least 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures on actual patients. Pass a State of California approved certification exam. Apply for certification. Pay application fee. Certification must be renewed every 2 years.
